Kleingarten

We spent the evening at my friend's kleingarten - German for small garden.  The kleingarten tradition began in the 1800s.  A pastor divided Church lands into plots and allowed poverty stricken people to lease them for a set price.  These gardens gave people the opportunity to grow their own food in times of shortages.

During the Industrial Era and as a result of the spreading urbanisation, city dwellers sought a parcel of green, a refuge against the dusty, crowded city streets. In addition, the famine that followed WW I helped establish the German Small Gardener´s culture.

Currently, these gardens exist through out the city and each club boasts several dozen members.  Each member has their own plot.  Plots cost several thousand dollars and a family has to be approved by a board before they can purchase one.

Our friends sought this garden as an escape from the apartment complex.  I couldn't wait to check out this German tradition.  The peacefulness surprised me - you don't even realize you are still in the city.

Of course, the kids loved it!

...to Authenticity

We arrived in Frankfurt early last week.  Our apartment required more maintenance so we spent four nights at the Adina Hotel in the downtown area.  WW II bombings leveled the city in the 1940s, but the Germans rebuilt it into the financial powerhouse and center it is today.  People call it "Main-hatten" due to its small section of skyscrapers and its loaction on the Main River.  Our hotel sits a block from the riverfront which houses over eleven museums, a 40 mile long bike and walking trail, and several playgrounds.

Our first night, we ventured out on the U-bahn, Frankfurt's equivalent to the Metro.  We wanted to see the section of the city in which we would be living.  As we struggled with the ticket machine, three people stopped to show us how to use it.  When we realized that it would not take a 20 euro bill, one man offered us his 5 euro bill.  The willingness of strangers to help us astounded me.

In the evenings, we took advantage of our central location and visited the sites around us.  We walked along the Zeil, Frankfurt's main shopping street.  Closed off to cars, people packed the street on the hot evening.  Stores such as Adidas, H&M, and Foot Locker stand beside German departments stores and restaurants.  We  walked to Germany's busiest train station which opened in the 1890's, and stopped at my favorite coffee store on Kaiserstrasse, the once grand 19th-century boulevard.

The hot sticky weather, very unusual for Frankfurt, drove us to a playground on the Main with water structures in which the kids could play.

As we relaxed at the playground, Dave commented on how similar life is here at first glance - after work, parents at the playground, staying cool with their kids.

From Plasticity...

We decided to spend the week before we moved at the place where all your dreams come true...Disney World.  Walt Disney and his team are marketing geniuses.  As we walked into the Magic Kingdom on our first morning, I thought I was on the set of the Stepford Wives.  Main Street, USA appeared eerily perfect as performers with huge smiles danced in the freshly paved street outside the freshly painted storefronts.  Cleaners appeared out of nowhere if a single piece of trash touched the ground.
We spent one night at the Animal Kingdom Lodge where all four of us "slept" in the same room.  (by slept I mean stayed awake all night).  Within feet of our balcony, giraffes and other exotic animals roamed the African Savanna.  (Disney's version of Africa of course lacked mention of tribal wars, horrific poverty...)

We spent the following five nights at a time share on Disney property.  The two bedroom presidential suite (really incredible) enabled us to enjoy the theme parks and still escape to our own space.  The kids' reactions to the Winnie the Pooh, the Mickey and Me Parade, and rides such as Pirates of the Caribbean made the trip for me.

New Adventures

Since July 1, we packed our house, stored our furniture, shipped our mini van and moved to Frankfurt, Germany.  We spent the last month living out of our suitcase and are finally settling into our new apartment.  Follow us as we live as ex-pats - exploring this new city and adventuring throughout Europe with our two little kids.
