Holland Road Trip Day 3: Easter Flowers (Not)

The kids woke Easter morning to Belgium chocolate eggs (out of this world) and Dutch slippers.  Owen insisted we hide the eggs - over and over again.

After a dozen egg hunts in our small hotel room, we met our friends for brunch.  The hotel provided Dutch pancakes, bacon, cheeses and meats, omelets, and a kid craft room.  We spent three hours sipping cappuccinos, drinking mimosas, and watching the kids paint eggs and create baskets.

After our leisurely morning, we headed to Keukenhof, the Garden of Europe.  The then mayor of the small town established the garden in 1949 to help with the Netherlands's flower export industry.  Approximately 7 million bulbs bloom there each year, and tour buses fill the parking lot during the eight weeks it opens.

Unfortunately, only one of the 7 million bloomed while we were there.  The weather forced most flowers to stay underground.  (This winter is the coldest in Europe since 1810.)  After an hour, we wished we could join the flowers.

We warmed up by sampling waffles, pizza, and Dutch croquettes.

The greenhouses provided a glimpse into how the garden must look in bloom.

Moods improved when we found the playground.

We ended the day in the maze.

With frozen fingers and toes, we returned to the hotel for our last dinner in the Netherlands.  Maybe next year, we will see flowers.
