Birthday Celebrations at the Alte Oper

When we bike downtown, we arrive at Opernplatz with the beautiful Alte Opera (Old Opera) presiding over the open square.  Inaugurated in 1880 but destroyed in 1944, this building reminds me I am not in Kansas any more.  In the 1960's, the city sought to clean the ruins and build office spaces on the Opera hall's grave site.  The citizens of Frankfurt protested and raised 16 million Deutsche Marks to rebuild the iconic structure.  I am glad art won.

I wanted to see a show there and waited for one in English - my main requirement.  When we saw signs for a West End production of Thriller, we jumped and enjoyed a few minutes of musical history in Frankfurt's historical building.
