Brugge, No Kids: Day 1

In March, we initiated a kids swap with our neighbors.  We watched their three while they spent two nights in Barcelona and they agreed to watch Emily and Owen while we escaped.   I chose Brugge, a well preserved Gothic city in Belgium because of the french fries, chocolate, waffles, and gourmet restaurants.  Our agenda focused on our pallet.

We drove 5 hours north and parked our car in the train station lot for two nights.  Driving saved money which meant staying at a gorgeous Bed and Breakfast.  Think medivel-esk room with modern bathroom.  (and comfortable mattress instead of old hay, no rats, clean floors….)

After checking in, we went straight for the french fries.  Rick Steves accurately described twin stands on Market Square with take - away frites (and not too friendly owners).  Next, we searched for the perfect Belgian Waffle.  The destination I sought closed for construction, so we asked a local for a second recommendation.  I guess sweet dough with sugar crystals tastes good almost anywhere.

We began Rick Steve's walking tour in Market Square in front of the Belfort (bell tower).  Built in 1486 the tower combined both Gothic and Roman architecture.

After passing dozens of chocolate filled windows, we decided to switch from historical buildings to renowned chocolate.  Multiple sources directed us to Dominique's The Chocolate Line and it did not disappoint.  We tried lavender, strawberry, Bordeaux, and ginger.

We ended the gastronomic afternoon at a hip tapas bar The Rock Fort eating tuna tartar, shrimp tempura, and more chocolate.
